READ THE FULL STORY HERE:
Passengers on a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Honolulu experienced a scare in the air Tuesday.
According to photos and video from people on board, it appears the cowling, or cover, fell off one of the engines.
Passengers tell us it all at started 40 minutes before they were about to land.
“We heard a really loud bang and the right engine went. It was a lot of smoke,” said passenger Holly Lynch.
“The engine right where we were sitting, which would have been on the right side of the plane, was completely blown,” said passenger Karyn Dove-Mitchell.
Passengers tell us the plane shook violently, descended, and slowed down.
“I grabbed (my son) Jack, and I put him in the seat and I buckled him in, and he started crying and then it was nonstop shaking,” said passenger Lori Shanks.
“Every once in a while it started tipping so I had some fears about that,” said passenger Kathleen Clifford. “I turned on my phone. I took this video, and at the end, I told my family I love them.”

Herhold: Stockton hopes to steal some San Francisco cachet

San Francisco’s airport director has protested the idea.

By Scott Herhold
......The Stockton airport wants to rename itself after a bigger city 83 miles away. The suggested moniker? The San Francisco Stockton Regional Airport. That’s 11 syllables of image ripoff.

(I wish I could tell you such a long moniker is an outlier. It is not. The Mineta San Jose International Airport weighs in at 13 syllables.  But at least it’s not confusing people.)

Let’s be candid here: The Stockton airport (unfortunate symbol: SCK) is no one’s idea of a busy hub. Calling it a hub insults the whole idea of hubs. It insults the idea of hubcaps. It has one airline, Allegiant....

When I called him, Mavrogenes contended that renaming the airport was part of an effort to promote Stockton’s image.

“One of the questions that people ask is, “Where is Stockton?’’ he told me. “Some think it’s up by the border with Oregon. Some think it’s near Bakersfield.’’

I was too polite to ask him how allying the airport with San Francisco would clarify the matter of location, but Mavrogenes quickly pointed out that other airports have done the same....

OAK Runway 12-30 Rehabilitation

9/12/2017

"Oakland, CA – (June 20, 2017): Today, Oakland International Airport (OAK) announces that it has received $37,406,854 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to rehabilitate the Airport’s main runway. The funds come by way of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which allocates federal funding to US airports. Runway 12-30 is OAK’s main commercial air carrier runway, and the Airport last completed a runway pavement overlay in 2001. The runway is currently due for a new overlay to provide a safe operating surface for aircraft and to maintain aviation safety standards.
As Runway 12-30 is typically in service 24 hours per day, staff has conducted a planning process with airlines, air carriers, the FAA, and other stakeholders to develop a preferred short-duration, full-closure option to minimize impacts to air carrier operations. A portion of the funding will be used to convert an existing taxiway into a temporary alternate runway, so that OAK’s flight operations are maintained during the Runway 12-30 rehabilitation activities.
“Oakland International is in the midst of strong economic growth, with more destinations than ever in our 90-year history,” said Bryant L. Francis, Port of Oakland Director of Aviation. "The upcoming rehabilitation of Runway 12-30 has been a collaborative effort with the FAA and is made possible by this significant grant award and the ongoing support of our congressional delegation. This critical project will ensure our primary air carrier runway remains functional and safe for all users.”
“As a Member of the transportation funding committee, I was proud to support funding for the Oakland International Airport to complete its runway improvement project and ensure the highest safety standards are met. The Oakland International Airport is a major travel center and economic engine for the entire Bay Area and this funding will help ensure it remains competitive with our nation’s world class airports,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
In the last six months, OAK has welcomed both British Airways and Level – IAG’s legacy and brand new low-cost carriers – and has announced or commenced new flights to Newark, Detroit, Baltimore, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, Mexico; London, Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Rome." Read more here.

Sixteen years ago an United Airlines 757-222 was on a normally scheduled flight from Newark to San Francisco. It is most commonly known as Flight 93. United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked by th Al-Qaeda and crashed in Somerset County due to the heroic the passengers in crew. It was not the only hijacking, with American 77, United 175, American 11, also hijacked by the Al-Qaeda.

"Through blurred eyes we find the strength and courage to soar beyond the moment. We look to the future knowing we can never forget the past. God Bless America.
